Non-award study
The Macquarie non-award program is an upfront tuition fees program that allows you to study individual undergraduate subjects without being enrolled in a degree. If you are looking to study for general interest, or professional purposes, then the non-award program is an option for you.
About non-award study
Non-award students can choose from one to four units on-campus which provides greater flexibility and allows students to arrange their university studies to suit their individual needs. Non-award studies are tuition-fee based, and as such are not eligible for FEE-HELP or HECS-HELP. This means that tuition fees must be paid upfront.
Why study non-award?
You can take on non-award study for general interest or personal development or for professional purposes. Once enrolled, non-award students are indistinguished from degree students and become subject to the same rules relating to prerequisite studies, work required and credit points. The rules are called the Bachelor Degree Rules and are found in the University Handbook of Undergraduate Studies. Rules 6-12 are the ones that students need to be most familiar with.
General interest or personal development
The non-award program offers a selection of units to study, with offerings from Business and Arts. Our business subjects come from our Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Commerce - Professional Accounting degrees. Our Arts subjects are from our majors of Cultural Studies and Media, Culture and Communication.
Professional purposes
The Bachelor of Commerce - Professional Accounting is accredited by CPA Australia and The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. Students who need to enrol in individual accounting subjects to gain admission into either professional program can enrol in subjects as a non-award student at Macquarie City Campus. Our central location makes it convenient for those accountants who work in the CBD.
Eligibility for enrolment
To enrol as a non-award student, an applicant must hold either Australian citizenship or have permanent resident status. Applicants who do not fall into either of these categories should contact Macquarie City Campus to discuss possible eligibility for non-award study. Current Macquarie students Macquarie students enrolled in a degree program are not permitted to enrol on a Non-award basis.
International cross-institutional students
International students enrolled at other institutions who wish to enrol as cross-institutional students should enrol as non-award students through Macquarie City Campus. They must provide with their application:
- a letter of approval from their home university, and
- their current confirmation of enrolment to cover the period of the intended non-award study
Entry to other degrees
If you wish to enter a degree at Macquarie University after completing your non-award studies, you must apply through University Admission Centre (UAC) for a degree at the North Ryde campus.
It is not possible to articulate directly from Non-award study to all degrees, such as commerce. The University has internal transfer policies, set out on the Coursework Studies Section website, which details the internal transfer policy from one degree to another.
The credit points you have gained as a Non-award student may be counted for transfer purposes, but the GPA will be calculated only on the units you have attempted in your bachelor degree.

Planning your studies
What is the workload?
To estimate the time required to attend lectures and
tutorials, research at the Library and to complete
assignments, you should multiply each credit point of your
enrolment by 4-hours. Therefore for one 3 credit point unit
you should expect to commit twelve (12) hours of your time
per week to your studies.
Tuition fees - How much will it cost?
Non-award study is paid for by up-front tuition fees, and
is charged on the basis of the number of credit points you
are enrolled in. Different departments charge different fees,
student enrolling in:
- arts units (3 credit point), fee per unit is $1,575
- business and accounting units (3 credit point), fee per unit is $1,890.
