What is the new Curriculum?
From 2010, Macquarie University will be offering a reduced range of degrees. These have been designed to offer greater flexibility and appeal to employers.
How will the degrees offered by Faculty of Business and Economics change?
The Bachelor of Commerce – Accounting will be replaced by the Bachelor of Commerce – Professional Accounting.
The new Bachelor of Business Administration will continue with revised unit requirements to the degree it replaces.
For other degrees in this Faculty (such as the Bachelor of Commerce, or the Bachelor of Commerce – Marketing), if you would like to continue studying in these fields, your options are:
- Remain enrolled in your current degree program at Macquarie City Campus
- Apply to transfer into the Bachelor of Business Administration degree at Macquarie City Campus. Entry criteria for this degree is based on your Grade Point Average (GPA).
- Consider transitioning to the new degree called Bachelor of Commerce at Macquarie University North Ryde.
If you wish to go ahead with options 2 or 3, you should consult a Student Adviser as soon as possible to discuss the best way forward for your study program.
Do the new degrees have professional accreditation like the old degrees?
Each discipline has, or is in the process of seeking, accreditation for the new degrees which replace degrees that are currently accredited.
What currently appears on my academic record/testamur?
Under the current rules, the degree name appears as ‘Bachelor of Commerce – Accounting’ or ‘Bachelor of Commerce – Marketing’
What will appear on my academic record/testamur under the new curriculum?
Under the new curriculum, only one name change will take place for Macquarie City Campus degrees in the Faculty of Business and Economics. The Bachelor of Commerce – Accounting will now be known as the Bachelor of Commerce – Professional Accounting.
Can I transfer to the new degrees before the end of 2012
Yes, you can transfer to the 2010 degrees and programs before the end of 2012, if you decide it is in your best interests to do so. However, you must seek academic advice before transferring.
What criteria apply for transferring into a new program?
Generally speaking, you will be able to transfer to a directly equivalent degree automatically on application.
Will it take longer for me to finish my degree if I transfer to a new degree?
This is possible, but for each student you need to check the requirements of the new degree and to what extent the units you have so far can be used to meet these requirements.
How are my exemptions and credit for previous study affected if I transfer to the new degrees?
Since exemptions and credit for previous study apply at a unit level, your existing exemptions and credit can be used to meet requirements of the new degree where they are the same as your old degree.
Do I have to select and register a major when I first enrol in the new degree?
You don't have to register a major when you enrol if you are enrolling in a 'named degree', such as the Bachelor of Commerce - Professional Accounting or the Bachelor of Business Administration.
I am not sure what I should do, who should I see?
If you are concerned about what to do, please attend the New Curriculum Information session to be held on Wednesday 13 January 2010 at 12.30pm or consult a Student Adviser. Specific details about this Information session can be found when you log into Portal.
